A Daisy for the Soul
A Daisy for the Soul
This is an ode to history. Early 90s Hip Hop has a special place in my heart. Listening to Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, De la Soul, Boss, all in the back seat of my mom’s lil hooptie. As I’ve grown older and found my own love for this era, I have a new found appreciation for the art, the poetry, the expressionism, the rebellion, and simply the cultural impact of the projects. Knowing that this was my mother’s vibe back then, encompasses my new understanding of my mother being a young black woman finding herself, her voice, her own expression of her creativity coupled with the challenges of status quo, single motherHood, and simply finding her self.
The rendition of an image of this beautiful woman, Nia, is taken from my recent trip to the Roots picnic. Being also a solo trip, I’ve found myself in a similar space of desire for finding myself, my creativity, and honestly myself. I mustered up the courage to take a solo trip and didn’t know I would have a soulful awakening. Recognizing my own young woman experience, single mom, adulthood, being challenged by the need for freedom, creativity, and openness. I had to capture this lovely being that was there embodying that experience perfectly while common, red-man, method man (90s Hip Hop greats) bumped jams off in the distance…I’m reminded of my craft, my desire to create, to be free and express myself in profound ways just like her.
